Escape the Snow and Discover Butterflies at miSci!

Escape this winter’s cold and snow with a breath of spring! Discover Butterflies, an exhibit of hundreds of native butterflies fluttering around in an indoor butterfly house, opens Saturday, February 18 at miSci, the museum of innovation and science. Opening Day activities include planetarium shows, Challenger Adventures in the Challenger Learning Center, hands-on activities in the butterfly house, 3D printing in the Tinkering Garage, and a journey through the walls of a home at The Living House exhibit.

Discover Butterflies is one of miSci’s most highly-anticipated exhibits each year,” said miSci President Dr. Mac Sudduth. “Visitors love to escape the cold and snow to stand inside our butterfly habitat and enjoy nature and science first-hand. It’s really fun for the entire family – from infant to grandparent, it’s an experience that multiple generations can enjoy together. The wonder and science behind these beautiful insects appeals to nearly everyone.”

At miSci’s Discover Butterflies, visitors can step into the spring-like indoor butterfly house and walk among hundreds of brilliantly-colored native butterflies, including: Monarchs, Black Swallowtails, Buckeyes, Painted Ladies, Common Buckeyes, Red Admirals, and Spicebush Swallowtails, or observe new butterflies emerging from pupae in the chrysalis chamber throughout the run of the exhibit. The exhibit consists of a re-creation of the butterflies’ natural, outdoor habitat with plants and flowers the butterflies require for food – all tended by masterful volunteer gardeners.

The opening week of Discover Butterflies coincides within miSci’s half-day STEM workshops during February school break. Classes are offered in morning and afternoon sessions for K-8 students, and topics include: nanotechnology, astronomy, coding, chemistry, insects, engineering and more. All workshops are $25 per student per class, and pre-enrollment is available online at miSci.org, though some classes may be available for drop-in registration.

Discover Butterflies at miSci opens February 18 and runs through April 23. miSci is open 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Saturday and 12:00 to 5:00 pm Sunday. miSci is closed Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017.
