Albany Housing Authority and City Partners Offer Summer Camps Serving Low Income Children

The Albany Housing Authority (AHA) announces its partnership with three Albany youth agencies in organizing summer camp activities for low income children. AHA is contributing funding to programs offered through the City of Albany Department of Recreation, Albany Police Athletic League, Inc. (PAL) and the Boys & Girls Club of Albany.

AHA and PAL will be collaborating with the Albany Police Department, Albany City School District, the Department of Recreation and the American Little League to provide day and evening camp programming at three locations in the City of Albany. PAL will be contributing transportation, materials, supplies, daily snacks, field trips, a family fun day and an additional, sixth week of camp this year at no additional cost, funded by an award granted by the William Gundry Foundation Inc.

Through AHA’s contributions, each of PAL’s camp locations will receive five full scholarships for day camp and two, one week long overnight scholarships at Camp Chingachgook on Lake George. All participants will also receive school supplies and a “Back to School Backpack” at the end of the program.

The AHA will also be partnering with the City of Albany Department of Recreation to coordinate its Capital City Basketball Camp & Clinic, located at Arbor Hill Park. The camp, for local youth in grades K-12, combines academics with sports, aiming to enhance campers’ grasp of math and science while learning the basics of basketball. Campers will be provided with breakfast and lunch, basketball instruction from athletes and coaches and STEM enrichment.

Camp Great Futures, a partnership between AHA and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Albany (BGCA), will also offer summer youth programming in Albany’s Arbor Hill neighborhood. The camp’s curriculum strives to foster campers’ academic growth, character and skill development through art, project-based learning activities, STEM projects, community service and recreational activities. BGCA’s teen members will be employed as Counselors-in-Training to help older campers develop leadership skills and professional experience.
