June 2, 2016Capital Region Law Enforcement Torch Run
For the 30th year in New York State, Law Enforcement officers will be carrying the Special Olympics Torch throughout various communities leading up to Opening Ceremonies at the State Summer Games. The cauldron will be lit on June 10th at the University of Brockport, signifying the opening of the 2016 State Summer Games. Since its inception, more than $9 million dollars has been raised through LETR fundraisers providing training, equipment, venues, uniforms and transportation for hundreds of thousands of Special Olympics New York athletes for over a quarter of a century!
Special Olympics CEO Neal Johnson, Mayor Kathy Sheehan, Mona Golub, Price Chopper | Market 32, and TD Bank representatives will participate in a press conference following the run. The Schenectady PD, Amsterdam PD, Niskayuna PD, Colonie PD, New York State Police, Albany PD, FBI, Albany County Sheriff’s Office, East Greenbush PD, Schodack PD, Troy PD, Rensselaer PD and Rensselaer County Sheriff’s along with numerous Special Olympics athletes will all participate in this years’ run.
This event will take place on Thursday, June 9, with a torch lighting at 9:30 a.m. followed by a concluding press conference at 12 noon after the run has finished. A second leg of the run begins in East Greenbush at 11:15 a.m.
The run will begin at Veteran’s Park, Schenectady, then go 14.5 miles down Central Ave to the steps of the New York State Capitol. A second leg leaves from East Greenbush Police Department and will travel 3.3 miles over the Dunn Memorial Bridge to join the other participants on the steps.
