Youngest and Oldest Classical Music Fans Descend on Proctors for ESYO’s Annual Concerts

On November 1, 2016, Empire State Youth Orchestras will share the joys of classical music with both the youngest and oldest music lovers in the Capital Region as hundreds of school children and seniors from around the region join the ESYO Youth Orchestra led by Conductor and Music Director Helen Cha-Pyo at Proctors in Schenectady, NY for the annual Young People’s and Seniors’ Concerts.

“Classical music truly crosses generations and no day exhibits this more,” said Cha-Pyo. “I love to see our young musicians ignite a new appreciation in other children, but it is equally rewarding to see the delight our players bring to the seniors who join us each year.”

The day begins at 10:30 a.m. with the Young People’s Concert. This annual concert seeks to teach hundreds of Capital Region elementary and middle school students about classical music through a fun, educational, and interactive program. Special guest DJ Gustav (played by Shaker High School Music Teacher Brian Austin) will lead the audience on an exploration of the wide range of emotion in classical music, from the joyous street celebration illustrated in Dvořák’s Carnival Overture, to the dizzying highs and lows featured in selections from Mahler’s First Symphony. DJ Gustav will use his own set of “building blocks” on stage to help the audience to “see” the structure of each musical selection and how this framework establishes a certain mood. As always, the program will include an introduction to the instruments of the orchestra. Tickets are no longer being sold for this event and record-breaking crowd of children is anticipated.

The second half of the day will be devoted to the Senior’s Concert. This free, annual event begins at 1:00 p.m. This concert will also feature Dvořák’s Carnival Overture and Mahler’s First Symphony. No ticket is required for this concert, but groups of 10 or more are asked to call 518.382.7581 to reserve seats.
