On April 21, Google implemented an algorithmic change that uses optimization as a ranking factor in mobile searches. Translation: If your website is not mobile-friendly, it’s going to be harder for people to find you. Optimization ensures a more readable and navigable format on smartphones and now, sites that are mobile-friendly will rank higher in search results.

Why is optimization important?

According to Google, “Users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.” However, sites that are not mobile-friendly will be ranked lower in searches. For some, this change may cause a serious loss in web traffic and revenue. While the boost in ranking will only apply to mobile searches and not those from desktops or tablets, it is sure to dramatically impact search-generated mobile traffic.
