The Little Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza and Market Block Books Donates Books to Whitney M. Young, Jr. Health Center’s Reach Out and Read Program

Whitney M. Young, Jr. Health Center (WYH) received a donation of books from The Little Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza and Market Block Books, provided by a grant from the James Patterson Independent Bookstore Campaign. The books support WYH’s Reach Out and Read program which provides age appropriate books to children at well-child visits, from birth to five years of age.

The Little Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza and Market Block Books recently won a second round grant from The James Patterson Independent Bookstore Campaign. Through this campaign, James Patterson supports independent bookstores in innovative ways and champions initiatives centered on getting our kids reading and supporting school libraries. In 2014, Patterson gave away over a million dollars to bookstores across the country.

Reach Out and Read is a national pediatric literacy program that helps children grow up with books and a love of reading. The program derives much of its impact from the trust that parents place in pediatric primary care providers whose job is to help their children grow up healthy. By having providers offer age-appropriate advice on reading, and then reinforcing the importance of books in the home by giving the child a new book, WYH is able to emphasize the importance of developing early literacy skills.

The Reach Out and Read Program at Whitney Young is coordinated by volunteers who are always looking for donations of new age appropriate books. WYH also accepts charitable donations to help increase access to high quality health care without regard to income. For more information, please visit www.wmyhealth.org.
