July 27, 2016SICM to Host Mac and Cheese Throw Down August 3, 2016
Macaroni and cheese may have been around for centuries, but in 2016, it’s still a favorite of many folks, especially children. The children of Schenectady will have an opportunity to taste the comfort food at some of the Summer Meals sites this summer. On August 3, the SICM Summer Meals program will host the first-ever Mac and Cheese Throw Down!
Chefs from Malozzi’s, Mazzone Hospitality, Pinhead Susan’s and Centre Street Pub will be creating their offerings of Mac and Cheese for the event, which will take place at four different Summer Meals sites, at the times indicated:
Quackenbush Park, Forest Road (Mt. Pleasant Neighborhood), Schenectady: 11:45 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Central Park, Central Parkway, Schenectady: 12 – 1:15 p.m.
Jerry Burrell Park, corner of Hamilton and Schenectady Streets, Schenectady: 12:30-1:45 p.m.
Wallingford Park, corner of 5th Avenue and Congress Streets, Schenectady: 12:45-2 p.m.
The judges for the Mac and Cheese Throw Down, who have volunteered to evaluate the food, include Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy, Schenectady City Council President Leesa Perazzo, and Chuck Steiner, President of the Capital Region Chamber.
The purpose of the Throw Down is first to draw attention to SICM’s Summer Meals program. It goes beyond that, though. According to Dave Taylor, SICM Summer Meals Director, the event “gives children the opportunity to try food from local restaurants, and it also allows the restaurants to exercise goodwill; they like to do good things for the community.” Mac ‘n cheese lunches will be available for the first 150 children at each site.
Schenectady Inner City Ministry (SICM) is a coalition of 50 congregations founded in 1967 for joint programs of social service and social justice. SICM runs a range of programs serving the city and county of Schenectady, including the SICM Food Program and pantry, the Schenectady Damien Center, Schenectady County Embraces Diversity, Summer Youth Meals and others.
