Schenectady County Community College Faculty and Staff Earn SUNY Chancellor’s Awards

Schenectady County Community College congratulates the following faculty and staff who earned the prestigious 2016 SUNY Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence.

patriciadicarloSCCCSUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service
Patricia DiCarlo, Information Processing Specialist II, Division of Liberal Arts

Patricia DiCarlo began working at SCCC in 2003. As Information Processing Specialist II, she works closely with the 21 full-time faculty members and 80 adjunct faculty members in the Division. Each semester, DiCarlo coordinates the induction ceremony for the College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges. She holds an A.A.S. from Hudson Valley Community College.

Harry Buffardi, Associate Professor, Division of Business, Criminal Justice and Law

Harry Buffardi began teaching at SCCC in 1996 as an Adjunct Faculty Member in the Criminal Justice program. He became a member of the full-time faculty in 2009 and has taught every core course in the Criminal Justice program. In his classes, students delve into victimology, motive, modus operandi, perpetrator and victim demographics and forensic counter measure. Buffardi takes opportunities to introduce cases that he has worked on during his lengthy career in law enforcement. He is Co-Advisor of the Criminal Justice Club and the Veterans Club. He holds an M.S.S.C. from Syracuse University and B.S. from Empire State College.

stephentysonSCCCSUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching
Stephen Tyson, Adjunct Faculty Member, Division of Liberal Arts

Stephen Tyson has been an Adjunct Faculty Member at SCCC since 2000, teaching art courses. He initiated and curated the first SCCC Student Art Exhibition in Spring 2014, now an annual event at the College. He also held the SCCC-Albany Student Art Display in Fall 2014 and Summer 2015. Tyson is a published author, as well as a public lecturer, curator, and judge. He holds an M. F. A. from the City College of New York and a B.F. A. from Manhattanville College.

babettefaehmelSUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities
Babette Faehmel, Associate Professor, Division of Liberal Arts

Dr. Babette Faehmel began teaching history courses at SCCC in September 2009. She has contributed articles for peer-reviewed journals and the Historical Encyclopedia of American Labor. She is the author of College Women in the Nuclear Age: Cultural Literacy and Female Identity, 1940-1960. She has presented papers at academic conferences, including the Berkshire Conference on the History of Women, and she recently chaired a panel on intellectual girls in the United States and the Soviet Union at the Conference of the Society of the History of Childhood and Youth in Vancouver, Canada. When Dr. Faehmel began to research identity and sexuality of college women in the Cold War, she secured a prestigious Social Science Research Council grant. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts, an M.A. from the University of Cincinnati and B.A. from the University of Hamburg.

Matthew Farron, Professor, Division of Business, Criminal Justice and Law

Professor Matthew Farron joined the Division of Business, Criminal Justice and Law in 2002, teaching business courses. He was instrumental in the planning and implementation of the Business and Technology Expo, an annual event that provides students an opportunity to learn about industry trends and speak with businesses and professional organizations about career paths. He has been the Coordinator of the Disney College Program for his division since Spring 2015. Additionally, Farron helped develop the Speed Pitch learning experience where students submit business plans to be judged by a panel of Capital Region experts in business, marketing, public relations, and entrepreneurship. He holds an M.B.A. from the State University of New York at Albany and B.S. from Siena College.

Dr. William Meckley, Dean, School of Music

Dr. William Meckley joined SCCC as an Instructor in September 1984. He was appointed to the position of Department Chairperson for the School of Music in 1999. In 2011, Dr. Meckley was appointed as the Division Dean for the School of Music. In addition to his responsibility of Division Dean, he was actively involved in the planning, design and construction phases of the new music facility which opened in the year 2012. Under his leadership the SCCC School of Music qualified for accreditation by National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). Dr. Meckley is Chairperson of NASM. He is a member of the NASM Accreditation Commission for the Community and Junior College Commission and a visiting evaluator/consultant. He is the founder of the critically-acclaimed Empire Jazz Orchestra, the professional ensemble in residence at SCCC. He holds his Ph.D. from Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester, M.M. from Ohio University, and B.A. from Fairmont State College.
