Sage to Welcome Dr. Rabi Ann Musah for 2016 Grace Van DerVoort Lecture

The Sage Colleges is pleased to host Dr. Rabi Ann Musah as the keynote speaker for its 2016 Grace Van DerVoort Lecture, tonight, April 6, at 7:30 p.m. in Bush Memorial Center on the Russell Sage campus in Troy. Musah is an associate professor of chemistry at the University at Albany. Her lecture is entitled “Getting to the Root of Psychedelic Plant Highs: Ambient Ionization Mass Spectometric Approaches to Identification and Characterization.”

A major thrust of Musah’s research is in the forensic identification of plants of abuse such as those endemic to South America and Africa, the forensic identification of synthetically produced small molecules that are abused, including synthetic cannabinoids and cathinones, and forensic applications of ambient ionization mass spectrometry in species level identification of abused plants. Her research program has been supported with grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Justice.

Musah is also the director of the UAlbany Center for Achievement, Retention and Student Success (CARSS). The primary goal of CARSS is to increase the retention and graduation rates of students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. Musah has received various awards for her contributions to research, teaching and service, including the UAlbany Chancellors Award for Excellence in Teaching and Service, a UAlbany Excellence in Teaching Award, a Torch Award in honor of outstanding teaching and service to UAlbany students, and a National Research Service award from the National Institutes of Health.

The event is free and open to the public.
