Sage to Host Annual Hochsprung Spring Summit

The Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung Center for the Promotion of Mental Health and School Safety at The Sage Colleges will host its spring summit on Friday, May 20. The summit, entitled “Concerned and Active,” is an opportunity for education, mental health and law professionals to collaborate with parents and students about mental health and school safety. It will be held on the Sage College of Albany campus from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Kahl Campus Center.

Dr. Mark Bertin, a board certified developmental behavioral pediatrician will deliver the morning keynote address. He is a frequent lecturer for parents, teachers and professionals on topics related to child development including autistic spectrum disorders, ADHD, parenting and mindfulness.

The afternoon keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Valerie Maholmes. Maholmes is the chief of the newly formed Pediatric Trauma and Critical Illness Branch at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) at the National Institutes of Health.

Through a series of breakout sessions, participants will interact with experts, connect with other professionals, and exchange ideas and resources on a number of topics including meeting the needs of children who have experienced trauma, mindful parenting and coping strategies for teachers. Founded in 2013 in honor of Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung, principal of Sandy Hook Elementary School and a doctoral candidate in Sage’s Educational Leadership program when she lost her life in the Newtown, CT shooting on December 14, the center’s mission is to explore, develop and share solutions that support the mental health of each child and safe school environments to maximize opportunities for teaching and learning.
