Musicians of Ma’alwyck Present Collaborative Concert Celebrating Suffragettes

Musicians of Ma’alwyck presents a very special collaborative concert with the Siena College Chorus and Chamber Singers under the direction of Dr. Timothy Reno celebrating the Suffragettes and the bicentennial of the birth of Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Titled a Declaration of Sentiments, the concert will feature works of American female composers Marion Bauer (Songs for Soprano and String Quartet, and Pieces for solo flute perhaps world premiere performances) and Amy Beach (Theme & Variations for Flute and String Quartet–an incredible piece of chamber music) and Daybreak of English composer Rebecca Clarke (who spent the final decade of her life in America). Soprano Jean Leonard will be the soloist. We are also delighted to present the world premiere of a work based on Suffragette texts by Kathleen Ballantyne. Commissioned by Siena College for this concert, the work is scored for chorus, vocal soloists and string quartet).  Ms. Ballantyne will be in attendance at this concert.

The concert will also include a reading by newscaster an documentary maker Elaine Houston of the seminal Suffrage movement document Declaration of Sentiments, whose principal author was Elizabeth Cady Stanton.

We are extremely excited to be presenting this concert in the brewery at Druthers in downtown Albany. This gorgeously renovated building on Broadway, is not far from where both Suffragette and Anti-Suffragette events happened in the early 1900s. George de Piro, brewmaster at Druthers, and a friend of Musicians of Ma’alwyck since the Poor Soldier opera, will be hosting us there and creating a special Anti-Suffragette brew for us.

This concert is part of a series of events commemorating the Suffrage movement.

Other events include a lecture by renowned historian and author Susan Goodier on Weds. March 16th at 6pm.”Votes for Women: Examining the Woman Suffrage and Anti-Suffrage Movements through Political Cartoons,” will be held at our Kings Place location (29 S. Swan St). This is a free lecture, but reservations are necessary at 518-436-9826. This talk is sponsored by the New York Council for the Humanities, Public Scholars Program. Druthers is also hosting a multi-course dinner with craft beer pairings. The meal, designed after Prohibition period society dinners, will offer the first official tasting of George’s new Anti-Suffragette brew. Attendance strictly limited to 100. There will also be a pre-concert talk beginning at 2pm. On the panel will be composer Kathleen Ballantyne, brewmaster George de Piro, music engraver and Temperance song expert Byron Nilsson and others from the concert. The pre-concert talk will be in the brewery. No reservations are necessary, but a concert ticket must be purchased.
