Field Hockey Looks to Surprise in

The MAAC Coaches picked Siena last in the annual Preseason MAAC Field Hockey Poll, released Monday by the conference office.

“This season we are adding high caliber teams to the schedule who we haven’t played before and are looking forward to that challenge,” Siena head coach Kara Zappone said.

“Following a successful spring, our team is highly motivated, and we hope that momentum will carry over to the fall to give us the start that we need and propel us the rest of the way.”

The Saints posted a 1-15 overall record last season and finished 1-4 in the MAAC, but continued to show improvement as the season progressed. Seven of Siena’s 16 games were decided by a single goal, and the Saints capped their 2014 season with an impressive road win at Rider which entered the game atop the MAAC Standings. The Saints return six starters and welcome eight newcomers to the 2015 squad.

The top-four finishers in the seven-team MAAC will qualify for the conference championships. The semifinals will be held November 6 and the championship November 8 and will be hosted by the highest seeded full MAAC member.

The season opener is set for Fri., August 28 at 1 p.m. when the Saints travel to Worcester, Massachusetts to battle perennial rival Holy Cross.
