Devils Down Marlies for First Win

Paul Thompson found Blake Pietila on a two-on-one early in the third period for the go-ahead goal, giving the Albany Devils their first victory of the season. Playing in back-to-back games against the Toronto Marlies, the Devils prevailed, 3-2, Sunday at Ricoh Coliseum.

Jim O’Brien and Mike Sislo also found the back of the net. In his third consecutive start, Yann Danis made 26 stops for his first victory as an AHL Devil.

Toronto’s Matt Frattin and Kasperi Kapanen scored and netminder Garret Sparks made 28 saves.

The Devils’ strong special teams start continued during Sunday’s game. O’Brien scored shorthanded at 5:52 of the second period for the game’s first goal. After Frattin tied the game at 8:39 and Kapenen gave Toronto the lead at 9:50, Sislo evened things with a power-play tally. Marc-Andre Gragnani setup the Devils alternate captain for a one-time blast from the left faceoff circle at 14:00.

In the third, Thompson sent a cross-ice pass to Pietila for a one-timer that beat a sliding Sparks at 3:24.

The win puts Albany at 1-1-1-0, while Toronto lost for the first time this season, moving to 3-1-0-0.

Next up, the Devils conclude their four-game road trip with a 7 pm outing Friday at Portland. Fans can follow the action online at ahllive.com or over the airwaves on 104.5 “The Team” ESPN Radio
