Students of the Year candidates are high school students enrolled in local public or private schools who are interested in and enthusiastic about volunteerism, philanthropy, community outreach, and leadership. The Students of the Year campaign not only offers visibility in the community and local media but also demonstrates candidates’ excellence in leadership and community engagement for college applications and professional resumes.

The Students of the Year Campaign is a seven-week initiative in which nominated high school students—as individuals or in teams of up to three candidates—participate in a fundraising competition to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Upstate New York/Vermont Chapter.   Students of the Year nominees must submit an application, then the Students of the Year Steering Committee will help select the candidates.  The students raise money in honor of a local patient hero who is currently battling or is in remission from a blood cancer.  Successful candidates will form teams, which may include family, friends, teachers or classmates, to help with planning, fundraising, and logistics of the campaign. Every candidate must have an adult sponsor, who will serve as a mentor or campaign manager throughout the campaign.

Students choose to compete to join the fight against cancer and improve the quality of life for our patients and their families. Leukemia is the number one cancer killer of children under the age of 20.  This is a powerful opportunity to help other youth battling blood cancers and raise awareness for the mission.

The candidate, or team of candidates, that raises the most money at the end of the seven-week competition earns the title Students of the Year as well as a $1,500 scholarship.
