Internship Program Requirements

  • Hour Requirements

Students taking the 3 – credit internship course are required to complete a minimum of 120 internship hours during the semester. Generally, the students complete 10-12 hours a week. The daily schedule will vary based on the intern’s classroom schedule and your requirements. Students can complete additional hours if agreed to in advance of starting the internship. Flexibility is key for both parties and generally scheduling has not been an issue.

  • Supervision

For the internship to be successful each intern must be assigned a supervisor. The identification of a business professional to coach and counsel the intern is an important part of the internship experience. The amount of time devoted by the supervisor will vary based on the intern’s abilities and the internship objectives.

  • Evaluations

 The supervisor will be asked to complete a mid-term and final evaluation of the intern’s progress. The evaluation is short and takes less than 10 minutes to complete. The supervisor will be asked to review the evaluations with the student.

  • Paid or Unpaid

Internships can be paid or unpaid. All unpaid internships need to comply with federal and state regulations regarding unpaid internships. These regulations should be reviewed to confirm compliance if you are offering an unpaid internship. If you work for a for profit organization and you are posting an unpaid internship you may be asked to confirm your organization’s compliance with all federal and state requirements regarding unpaid internships before you can post the internship.
